Coaches Poll

Some interesting stuff going on in the polls this week. Check them out here

At 5A, Gadsden, now 8-0, is tied at #1 with powerhouse Cleveland. With the loss of Castellanos, many thought the Panthers were going to be a pushover; not so–the win against Artesia shut down the doubters. I’m a little surprised Carlsbad isn’t ranked higher, and I think Oñate ought to have a spot somewhere in there–perhaps Eldo’s #10 spot. The Eagles are still there in spite of their loss to mid-ranked 3A Hope Christian last week at Metro.

Talent-wise, 4A seems to be bunched together fairly close–it makes for great competition, and I think probably the most exciting classification in the state right now. I’d love to see any of these top five teams match up at this point. Artesia is still at the top in 4A, with St. Pius slowly closing the gap. Piedra Vista, still at #5, just got a monkey off their backs, beating Monument Valley for the first time in 14 tries. I have a feeling they’ll be regarded much more highly as the season progresses.

Texico’s loss to 1A Tatum on Tuesday obviously hasn’t been considered in this week’s poll. I’m expecting them to drop at least a spot or two, but the 2A polls usually confuse me: the poll on August 24th had Santa Rosa at #1; they were nowhere to be found when the next poll was released. The appearance of Mesilla Valley, especially over their district foes Tularosa and Lordsburg this week, is another head scratcher.

Games to Watch

Why? Because I get to see Cleveland! Not sure how competitive these ones will be, but expect both Cruces teams to put up a good fight. Also expect a good turnout as the southern volleyballers get a look at the Chargers.
