Rankings

Just reviewed what I posted yesterday…sorry. Apparently I can’t count–or spell.

A little flip-flop at first for Rio Rancho and Gadsden. Some answers about their rankings could potentially be settled this weekend. I’m also wondering how Eldo’s loss to St. Pius, and now La Cueva (see below) will affect their respective standings.

The 2A rankings make me wonder what’s happening with Tularosa and Estancia. I’m not sure they belong at No. 3 together.  You’ll recall Tulie temporarily lost their setter to injury for the Mountain Top tournament, as was still able to get it done with no problem–even some of the JV players got some floor time.

St. Pius X smites La Cueva

St. Pius, ranked No. 1 in the September 22 coaches poll, was able to take down a formidable La Cueva squad Wednesday night, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-15.

Sara Weber racked up 20 kills on the night, while middle Hannah Grazda earned 14. Senior DS Chaney Addey was reportedly hot from the service line.

St. Pius, I’m sure, is looking forward to this weekend’s Rio Rancho tournament to see how many other 5A teams they can terrorize. A game to watch will be when St. Pius takes on Artesia at 2:30 PM Friday in pool play. This pits No 1. vs No. 3 Artesia who is more than capable of holding their own.

Gadsden covered by El Paso Times

The El Paso Times’ prep reporter Felix Chavez covered the Gadsden Panthers in Tuesday’s edition. Props to Chavez and the Times for the story and willingness to cover a team outside El Paso. Read the article on Gadsden.

Alamogordo learning how to win

The Lady Tigers are getting the hang of the winning thing, bouncing Hobbs in three Tuesday night, 28-26, 25-22, 25-19. Impressive is the 14-5 run in the first set, after being down 10 points, and winning 28-26.

Coach Thomas has done an admirable job getting his squad in the right state of mind, something that will help and they will definitely need when they open district action September 28th against Gadsden. Suddenly, there is a whole new complexity in 3-5A action. Read about the Tiger’s new found success in the Alamogordo Daily Times.

Cloudcroft is learning, too

Cloudcroft has been a team that has been overshadowed in recent years by District 5-2A oppenents Tularosa and Mesilla Valley Christian. With second year coach Joni Watson, things are changing, which includes a nice victory over Hagerman on Tuesday. The Lady Bears bested Hagerman in four, 25-22, 25-19, 21-25, 29-27. The Alamo Daily News has the complete lowdown on Da Bears.

Carlsbad is hungry

With a gutsy remark about libero Sunnie Sutphin, brand new Cavegirl coach Bonnie McKenzie can’t help but to build confidence in her team (Sutphin is a mighty fine libero, by the way). With two consecutive wins over Oñate and Goddard, Carlsbad has their sites set on the aforementioned Artesia Bulldogs next Tuesday. I think it will be a good benchmark to see how much they’ve improved, and I’m sure Artesia will be more than happy to oblige.

If the journaling that’s mentioned in the story works for Carlsbad, maybe coach McKenzie can teach that to the NMSU and UNM football programs…ouch! Thanks, I’ll be here all week.
