Daily Dig – Sep 13

Games to Watch

St. Pius @ Cleveland 7:00 PM

St. Pius is not traveling the easy road in preparation for their 4A competition.

Having faced #3 La Cueva on Saturday (losing 3-1) at the Metro Tourney and #4 Rio Rancho on Monday (winning 3-2), the Sartans have their sights set on #1 Cleveland on Tuesday.

If this three game stretch in four days doesn’t prepare (and exhaust) them, I don’t know what will. Not sure how this one is going to turn out, but expect lots of fireworks.

Estancia @ Tularosa

These two 2A giants are gearing up for what I’m sure is a preview of  things to come around tournament time.

UTEP @ NMSU – 7:00 PM

If you’re anywhere around the Las Cruces area, come check out the Aggies hosting the Miners. UTEP has improved a lot over the last few years; sophomore OH/middle Jacquie Cason and the addition of  middle Xitlali Herrera will make things very interesting for the Aggies. This should be a great game with some great atmosphere!

Scores from last night

St. Pius 3, Rio Rancho 2 (17-25, 25-15, 26-28, 25-22, 15-9)
Mountainair 3, Menaul 0
Dexter 3, Mescalero Apache 0
Des Moines 3, Dexter 0

  1. Maybe someone from NMAA can comment or explain the following.
We had some interesting officiating at the Albuquerque Metro tournament that raised some eyebrows and caused a little discussion about what should be considered a “conflict of interest”.
The officials handbook says that they should’nt be involved in anything that “is, or APPEARS to be a conflict of interest.”

    Four interesting situations that occurred:
    1. A person refereeing a game involving a team where he, until recently was the head coach.
    2. A person refereeing a game while his wife sat on the bench as the assistant coach.
    3. A person refereeing a game where his child was playing.
    4. A person refereeing a game where the coach of one of the teams had cut his child from the team 3 TIMES. (think there may be some hard feeling here?)

If these aren’t a “conflict of interest”, what could possibly be one?
There were four different courts being used where they could easily have traded with an official on another court.
How about other parts of the state. Do You have problems like this?
Seems like the officials should self-disqualify themselves in these cases but they don’t in Albuquerque.
If the officials want respect and credibility they need to clean up their house.
All 4 of these cases fail the “smell test”.

  2. This is a no-brainer.
These officials know what that did was wrong, we know its wrong and the NMAA knows its wrong.
Who investigates the lack of ethics from these officials?
Until the NMAA shows some integrity and police’s its own house, it is really hard to have much respect for these out of control referees.
