Carlsbad’s Morrill verbally commits to Western
Diamond Morrill has made a verbal commitment to play for Western New Mexico, located in Silver City, New Mexico.
The Mustangs, led by Jim Callendar, play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, a NCAA Division II conference. Western finished the 2010-11 campaign with a 13-12 record.
The talented Carlsbad setter has been actively pursued by several schools in both New Mexico and Texas. Morrill has played a key role in Carlsbad’s vast improvement over the last few seasons, including a state tournament appearance in 2010, the Cavegirl’s first in almost a decade.
Coaches Polls
There have been some great conversations in regards to the coaches polls over the past few weeks, including a great explanation of tournament seedings by “Volleyball” (read it here).
While not scientific, and by some admissions not a priority for some coaches, the polls do offer a “feel” for where teams stack up against each other. I think it also helps encourage teams and players to improve, and definitely can be a motivating tool for coaches. It’s something I look forward to seeing every week.
There are a couple of gripes with the polls:
- The polls are being misused by coaches to give their teams a #1 vote when they have no business receiving that vote. While the coaches may feel this is motivation for their squad, it does nothing more than undermine the polling process and to some extent the players and their personal development. There’s a not-so-subtle difference between coddling and encouragement; coaches are not doing their players any favors when they do this.
- Coaches are not considering the “big picture” when casting votes; they’re voting relative to their team or district and not paying attention to what’s happening elsewhere. I think the Estancia-Bosque debate falls in this category. For what it’s worth, Estancia, you should be #2.
These seem to be happening in the 2A polls the most, and for those of you with a good memory, it’s really nothing new in this classification.
I think the best one can do is to hope the coaches realize what is happening and fix it!
