Daily Dig – August 23

With the NMAA using MaxPreps.com for all score reporting and schedules, things are no longer in a centralized spot. This means scores and schedules will be a little more difficult to report. I’ll do my best while I learn the new system.

Las Cruces opens with a win

Las Cruces defeated El Paso Eastwood 3-2 (24-26, 28-26, 24-26, 25-22, 15-9) Tuesday night.

The Bulldawgs looked much improved offensively, with setting duties handled by sophomore Alyssa Abney and senior Audrey Velasquez.

Las Cruces plays host to Deming next Tuesday and travels to El Paso to play in the 3rd Annual Margaret Hussmann Tournament of Champions at Franklin High School.

Centennial racks-up first win…ever

After a shaky first set, the Centennial Hawks made quick work of Anthony (TX) in their first-ever varsity game, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-9).

Nerves were somewhat of a factor, according to head coach Al Rosen. The Lady Hawks quickly found their rhythm and with liberal feeds to junior OH Taylor Turner and sophomore OH Addie Pedraza, Centennial made quick work of Anthony. Anthony was lead by Nina Sato.

Mayfield falls to EP Franklin

The Lady Trojans faced a daunting task Tuesday, opening their season to El Paso powerhouse Franklin. The Lady Cougars plowed through the Trojans in three sets (25-15, 25-14, 25-7).

Mayfield will head back to the drawing board and get ready to face…many more El Paso teams at Margaret Hussmann Tournament of Champions. The Trojans are in pool C, with the likes of a very, very strong El Paso Chapin, equally hot Eastlake and Franklin JV.
