Cruces stuns La Cueva

Coming as a surprise to everyone except the Bulldawg squad, Cruces pulled off the first defeat of the La Cueva Bears since September 11, 2021, with a four-set victory on the Bear’s home court Tuesday night, 25-22, 25-10, 16-26, 25-23.

In what is a preview of this year’s championship game, sophomore phenom Addison Massey led both teams with 26 kills and a hitting percentage of 0.352. The nearest kill stat was from Bear’s senior, Tea Kalajdzic, with 16 kills.

With a stranglehold on class 5A since their loss to Centennial in the 2020 state finals, the Bears will not let a defeat go unnoticed. I’m sure they’ll come roaring back for the remainder of the season.

Coaches Polls

The latest coaches poll released on Monday shows the various programs settling into what should be consistent rankings for the remainder of the season.

Class 4A polls reflect the Artesia blowout of #2 Goddard and the win over Los Alamos. St. Pius dropping to #3 was a little surprising, but the expectations were for wins (even if close) over lower-ranked 5A opponents Centennial and Albuquerque High.

Keep an eye on the 2A action as Cloudcroft steals the top spot from Texico. Never ones to be held down, I’m expecting Texico to prove they’re number one in 2A. I also like what Tulie is doing and expect them to be in the mix for the remainder of the season.
