Galvan joins UNM volleyball

JJ Glavan joins the Lobos after having spent the last two seasons as an assistant at UCCS. He’s also coached with Colorado Junior Club since 2007.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Jonathan “JJ” Glavan has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of New Mexico volleyball program as announced by seventh-year head coach Jeff Nelson on Monday.

“I am very excited to get a coach of JJ’s caliber at such late notice and look forward to working with him,” Nelson said. “He has done an outstanding job with the Colorado Juniors (club) program and also as an assistant at UCCS. We start our season next week Wednesday, and he will be ready to go.”

Glavan says the high-level of play is what he is most looking forward to at UNM.

“I grew up in Colorado Springs and followed Mountain West volleyball my whole life so it’s exciting to now be part of something I’ve followed since I was young,” Glavan said. “Coach Nelson and his staff have already established a good program here at New Mexico, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”

Glavan has served as an assistant coach at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for the past three seasons. While with the Mountain Lions, he was in charge of training all positional players, scouting opponents and developing game strategies and recruiting. UCCS posted winning records both fall seasons that Glavan was on staff, going 16-12 in 2011 and 18-11 in 2012. The program also had a number of individuals receive conference, regional and national accolades over the last two seasons.

In addition to coaching at UCCS, Glavan was the assistant coach for 17’s and 18’s and the head coach for 15’s and 16’s at Colorado Junior Volleyball Club in Monument, Colo. He joined the staff at Colorado Juniors in the spring of 2007 and over six years coached teams at Junior Olympic National Championships and trained teams to six top-10 placements at national qualifying tournaments.

Other coaching stops for Glavan included two years as the head coach at Peak Accel Volleyball Club, four years at Liberty High School as the junior varsity and assistant varsity coach and two seasons as the head varsity coach at Rampart High School. He also served as a summer camp instructor for a number of organizations including USA Volleyball, University of Colorado, University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, UCCS and Colorado Juniors.

Outside of coaching, Glavan worked full time as a humanities teacher at Mountain Ridge Middle School in Colorado Springs from Fall 2006 to Summer 2013.He graduated from Western State College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in history before earning his Colorado Secondary Education Certification in 2011.
